major new theme park destination being developed by AAG. The development is in line with the vision set by HH Shk. Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, through his innovative entertainment and hospitality driven expansion projects for Dubai and the UAE.

The Al Ahli Group, under the leadership of Chairman Nasser Ali Khammas and driven by the idea and dedication of CEO Mohamed Khammas, is poised to bring the region's first and only global theme park destination directly to the heart of the Emirates. AAG and Marvel are also in initial stages of discussions about additional projects throughout the greater Pan Arabia region.

AAG has been in discussions for more than two years with the owners of the world's top intellectual properties in the entertainment arena and is extremely proud of its new long-term partnership with the world renowned Marvel brand. The Project will open in 2011 with a direct investment of over $1 billion USD. The creative team, which consists of some of the most spectacular creative minds from around the globe, will be based in Hollywood, Orlando and Dubai throughout the four year development process. New technology and unparalleled visitor experiences will be the hallmark of the theme park, creating a new standard for theme parks around the world.

Family destinations have not evolved in Pan Arabia and thus it's time that we cater to that demand and make the investment required for global tourism.

Now, it won't be much longer until the children in Pan Arabia and the world can experience new and exciting rides with Marvel's Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk, the Fantastic Four and many other Super Heroes right here in the UAE.

"This partnership is a result of the appreciation and loyalty that Marvel has internationally, and was realized through the dedication and management of the Marvel team led by my friend David Maisel. Without his personal efforts and dedication, it would have been a long time before the world would be able to experience the Marvel Super Heroes in what we aim to be the best entertainment destination in the world. The first DIFC Gulf Art Fair, the first such event to be held in the emirate of Dubai, got off to a flying start on March 07.

The emirate is promoting itself as a new trading hub for contemporary art, taking advantage of its location seven hours both from London and from China. It is a magnet for wealthy Indians, Russians and Middle Easterners, which explains why the authority which controls the burgeoning financial markets in Dubai, the Dubai International Financial Centre, bought a 50% stake in the fair at the beginning of this year.

Established by London dealer John Martin and local financier Ben Floyd, the fair has attracted 40 international dealers keen to test this emerging market.

Exhibitors come from as far afield as Tokyo, Korea, China and the US, and were rewarded yesterday with immediate sales to a wide-ranging group of collectors including Americans, Iranians and Indians. It is too early to judge whether the elite of Dubai will support this initiative by buying on their home ground, but the fair has certainly created a great buzz in the region, and was attended by the Minister of Culture.

“We have sold five pieces by Indian artist Sohan Qadire (in the $30,000 range); there is a tremendous amount of enthusiasm. The crowd seems very sophisticated and well travelled, and we are very happy as they relate to the works we brought to show here,” said Sundaram Tagore of the eponymous New York gallery.

“I thought I would either sell nothing or everything,” said London dealer Ben Brown who found buyers for a Candida Höfer photograph and a painting by Tony Bevan as the fair opened. Michael Hue Williams of Albion gallery immediately sold two calligraphies by Xu Bing, two paintings by the young British artist Kristian Ryokan and two abstract wax paintings by Jose Maria Sicilia.

Indeed, abstract works were to the fore, as dealers played safe and avoided provocative images and nudity. There was also a choice of classic works by artists such as De Chirico, Marino Marini and Klee, as well as recognized “brand names”—Picasso still lifes, Warhol dollar signs, an Indiana Love sculpture and Hirst spot and butterfly paintings.

A sign of how closely this fair is being watched is the presence of Art Basel director Sam Keller, accompanied by his VIP programme director. He said, “New fairs expand the number of collectors and that’s good for the market as a whole”.

What is certainly going to boost the cultural profile of the whole region is the plan to build five museums in neighbouring Abu Dhabi. The mega, $1 billion deal between the emirate and the Louvre was signed just 24 hours before the fair opened.

The Dubai Desert Rock festival ended yesterday with a glittering display of fireworks and performances by bands like Incubus, The Bravery, Prime Circle, Junkyard Groove and former Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant & Strange Sensation. The last two acts in particular, had the crowd screaming for more.
The crowd just wild when Incubus took the stage. And they went wilder when the band played Wish You Were Here and Nice To Know You.
Andrew Melius, a high school student who studies in Abu Dhabi said that the most electric performance of the night was Incubus. “Incubus really rocked,” said Melius who says he will definitely make the trip back the next year.
As the last act geared up to play, one noticed a much older crowd that began to band together close to the stage. 43 year old Anand Sharma, a marketing manager who works in Dubai said that his friends and him had been waiting for a long time to watch Plant play.
“When we were younger, we’d listen to the music on the radio or on tapes that friends who’d traveled abroad would bring back to India. We never dreamed that we’d watch him live, because when we were young, foreign live acts weren’t plentiful in India,” said Sharma who donned a Led Zeppelin t-shirt.
Rock guru Plant tried out a bunch of Arabic phrases onstage that met with raucous applause (‘Salaam alaikoum, Dubai’ and ‘Shukran’). The band also performed other singles such as Freedom Fries and Led Zeppelin classic Black Dog.

From garage to the big stage

DUBAI When you’re sharing cabin space with Iron Maiden and Lauren Harris is trying out the lead guitarist’s instrument, life really couldn’t seem bigger. However, the truth for Chennai-based group, Junkyard Groove, the dream’s not only real, it’s larger than life. The group that won Shamal 2006 has just recently signed a three-year contract with recording studio Creative Kingdom Records, Dubai. The band is now on their way to recording a new album. They feel that it can only get better with time.
It all started, as they say, on Easter night two years ago when frontman Ameeth Thomas and lead guitarist Siddharth Srinivasan sat down and began talking about making the band. “Things just fell in place then when we found Craig and Jerry to form the band. We used to practice like other bands in my garage but I can tell you that during our first year of practice, we didn’t think we’d ever make it here. Year two was different though. We knew we were kick-ass,” laughs Siddharth.
The band was offered a three-year stay in Dubai during the tenure of their record though they flatly refused. “Dubai’s nice, but home’s home,” said Ameeth who is a keen supporter of PETA.
“Dubai’s really gorgeous. Sheikh Zayed Road’s going to beat the New York skyline in a couple of years. Plus, we got loads of friends here, so we always enjoy coming here. Though I don’t think I’d want to live here. It’s a bit hot,” smiled Craig Maxworth, drummer of the band.
Their first performance at Desert Rock was a bit unnerving for the band as Siddharth experienced technical problems midway. “However we saw an Indian flag out in the crowd and that really calmed us down,” said Craig.
The band drew their inspiration from performers at this year’s Desert Rock like Iron Maiden and Robert Plant but also from Dave Matthews, Guns & Roses and U2. “I’m looking forward to meeting Robert Plant the most, though Mastodon and In Flames were nice too,” said Jeremiah Abraham John who was previously a resident of Abu Dhabi.
The value of the contract has yet to be decided on but for now Junkyard Groove are content to play somewhere other than in Sid’s garage.

Dubai will be the boating world’s biggest attraction next week, as the gates open to the 15th edition of the Dubai International Boat Show (DIBS), the premier exhibition in the Middle East for the leisure marine industry.

Organised by the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), the Dubai International Boat Show will be an impressive 33 percent bigger than the previous year, with 20,000 square meters of net exhibition space and more than 142 boats exhibiting on the water.

As the region’s largest gathering of leisure craft, equipment and associated services, DIBS continues to grow with an unprecedented 722 participating companies in 2007 (an increase of 53 percent).

The show, which will take place from 13 - 17 March 2007 at the Dubai International Marine Club, Mina Seyahi, is the most important event in the marine calendar for local manufacturers in the Middle East to showcase to the world their complete offering. The event is also a key platform for international manufacturers, dealers and distributors looking to tap into the regions booming leisure marine market.

“The Dubai International Boat Show holds the position as the regions premier event for people involved in the business of boating, whether it’s exhibitors launching new products or trade or public buyers looking for good deals and great marine leisure products,” said Helal Saeed Al Marri, Director General of Dubai World Trade Centre.

“DIBS 2007 will bring together more than 25,000 boating enthusiasts from across the region to Dubai, a city steeped in maritime history and culture, for what will be the most exciting and impressive edition of the show,” he added.

Interest in boats and sailing is at an all time high, driven in particular by the increasing availability of waterfront property, afforded by multi-million dollar developments and new marinas in Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Oman and the United Arab Emirates.

“As the market continues its impressive growth, manufacturers, dealers and distributors from across the Middle East are producing and importing greater numbers of high performance and luxury boats to cater for the demand,” continued Helal Saeed Al Marri.

“In turn, prospective international buyers know that the first port-of-call must be the Dubai International Boat Show where they can explore the market and view the very latest range of boats, equipment and products,” he added.

The show is divided into four main areas: the Marina Display Area, displaying both power and sailing boats; and the Luxury Supplies and Services Area, an indoor air-conditioned area bringing together boat builders, waterside developers, interior design companies, charters and brokers.

Some of the world’s biggest manufacturers such as Luerssen from Germany and Amels from the Netherlands will be exhibiting in DIBS’ Luxury Supplies and Services area, which will also house the impressive British Marine Federation pavilion, HISWA Holland Yachting Group and the German Boat Builders Association.

Other new national groups that will be represented at DIBS 2007 include UBI France, the National Marine Manufacturers America from the USA, British Marine Federation UK and Mauritius Marine.

There is also the External Area, which showcases small to medium sized craft; and the Equipment Supplies and Services Area, grouping together an extensive range of marine equipment supplies and services

DIBS 2007 will also be a showcase for several superyachts, which are more than 25 metres in length offering luxurious facilities including state-size dining rooms as well as state-of-the-art entertainment and satellite communications systems.

ART Marine, one of the UAE’s leading distributors of luxury yachts, will use DIBS as the platform for the world-wide premier of its brand new luxurious superyacht the Azimut 103S, which is more than 30 metres in length and can reach speeds of 35 knots.

Combining Italian style with the latest marine technology, the Azimut 103S offers 120 square-metres of usable external space, divided between the stern platform, the cockpit, the relaxing area at the bow and the new upper deck space.

Visitors will also be able to view a diverse range of marine products including fishing equipment, navigation systems and computer equipment, water sports clothing and marina equipment in the equipment and luxury supplies sections.

As well as viewing the state-of-the-art watercraft on display at the show, visitors will have the opportunity to win a brand new Yamaha SuperJet WaveRunner and a Laser Pico dinghy.

New to DIBS will be the Dive Middle East Exhibition (DMEX) 2007 which will bring together the leading names from the world of dive equipment, supplies and services and will provide a natural meeting point for divers and marine leisure enthusiasts.

Among the attractions on display will be a diving demonstration platform and a floating exhibition area to enthral visitors. Demonstrations will feature new underwater cameras and advanced underwater communication technologies, providing visitors on-land with a glimpse of the sea depths as well as. Visitors can also see Dubai ladies’ free-diving champion, Sara Lise-Haith in action, with guidance and advice from experienced free-diving instructor Emma Farrel

Marine industry professionals are also signing up for the 3rd Gulf Boating Conference, which takes place at the Boat Show on the mornings of the 14 and 15 March, and is this year entitled, “The Expanding Regional Market”.

Dubai Municipality has released statistics on the demographics of the emirate. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the report only served to prove what is already known to people living and working in the emirate, namely, that Dubai is increasing in dramatic form in all directions.

As with any survey of this type, there is much fodder on which to feast, not only from the government's viewpoint, but also all industrialists and investors wanting to determine trends and keep abreast, if not ahead, of them.

One of the most alarming facts to emerge is the disproportion between the number of men and the number of women in the emirate - more than 3:1.

This obviously shows that there are a large number of "bachelors" - a term used to include married men who are forced to live apart from their family - besides single men. It therefore throws into doubt the practice of moving single persons out of the city to ensure the safety and security of families.

For not only will the majority not be living in or near the city centre, where most jobs can be found, but it also infers that all unmarried people are not to be trusted around families, which assumption is appalling.
