Dubai will soon have a new addition to its growing program of art fairs and exhibitions, with the launch of "Art and Antiques Dubai", scheduled for February 2008.

With the support of the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, major organizer Haughton International Fairs plans to stage the event at the Madinat Jumeirah, putting some of the world’s finest arts and antiques on display in the region for the first time.

Art and Antiques Dubai will offer connoisseurs and investors in the Middle East region an unparalleled opportunity to view and purchase a selection of the world’s finest art and antiques. One of the distinctive factors of Haughton International Fairs’ events globally is the quality of the work on display, and organisers are confident that the Dubai Fair will match and even exceed this high standard.

Dubai was chosen as the host city for this major event because of its increasingly important and expanding international profile of the world art stage, underpinned by its development as a major financial centre in the Middle East.

“Dubai is ideally placed to become a focal point for the most exciting art markets in the world,” said Khalid bin Sulayem, Director General of Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing. “We hope the fair will play a positive role in encouraging art in the emirate and bringing art lovers from different parts of the world to Dubai.”

Collecting categories expected at Art and Antiques Dubai include Islamic works of art; arms and armor; silver; antique and modern jewellery; a broad range of furniture and decorative arts; and fine art, including Middle Eastern, Indian, and Western paintings, drawings, and sculpture.

International art dealers will be joined by specialists from the Middle East, North African and India, according to Giles Haughton, event director.
“Many exhibitors and dealers will already know Haughtons’ reputation for producing top-class events in the United States and United Kingdom, and we now look forward to welcoming regional exhibitors to participate in a Haughton event much closer to home,” said Haughton.

“Art and Antiques Dubai will stand out for the superior quality of the works of art, and for the cultural buzz it will share with other Haughton fairs. The presentation of our fairs is extremely important to us and Art and Antiques Dubai will be organised according to the same exacting standards,” he concluded.

Giles Haughton, event director of ‘Arts and Antiques Dubai’, says people of all artistic tastes will enjoy the February 2008 fair.

Art and Antiques Dubai will take place at the Madinat Arena, Madinat Jumeirah from 21-24 February 2008.

Visitors and residents to the UAE will soon be able to take home an exciting memento of Dubai that is representative of the visionary leadership of the emirate.

Dubai's first souvenir gold coin 'Visions of Dubai' will be available from September.

The Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) announced that it has appointed Jumeirah Retail, part of Jumeirah Group, the Dubai-based luxury hotel and hospitality management company, and Dubai Duty Free (DDF) as the authorised distributors for the gold coin souvenir.

Series

Produced in Dubai under the guidance of DMCC, the first coin in the series features the image of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on one side while Burj Al Arab is engraved on the other.

Other coins in the series will feature landmark images of Dubai that also reflect the spirit and identity of the emirate.

"The 'Visions of Dubai' series of gold coins will serve as high-value tokens that visitors can purchase and take home as mementos and gifts," said Colin Griffith, Executive Director for Gold and Precious Metals, DMCC.

Marcel Hendricks, General Manager of Jumeirah Retail, said: "We are very proud to have been appointed as authorised distributors of the coins in Burj Al Arab's dedicated Al Dukan retail store."

Colm McLoughlin, Managing Director, DDF, said: "The demand for gold among passengers travelling through Dubai International Airport is greater than ever. In the first half of 2007, sales in the gold category at DDF grew by 35 per cent. With such a strong demand, I am sure that the 'Visions of Dubai' series ... will prove to be a great success."

Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) and Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) are transforming Dubai into a world-class retail destination, with total consumer spending expected to hit US$7.6 billion by 2009.

Since their inception, the DSF and the DSS have transformed Dubai into the biggest entertainment and shopping hub of the region, achieving a quantum leap in areas of retail trade, said Noha Safar, Director of the Marketing & Communications Department at the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI).

"The Dubai government lays special focus on the retail trade sector, providing it with all necessary tools of success," she commented. The DSF and DSS are among the most effective means through which the government is developing the retail trade and this reflects positively on the national economy, she noted.
"The retail trade sector accounts for more than 50% of Dubai's total trade volume," she said. Total consumer spending in Dubai is expected to reach US$7.6 billion 2009, the largest retail spending in the GCC, according to the latest studies.

Since the launch of the DSS ten years ago, a large number of UAE nationals as well as residents have opted to spend their summer vacation in the UAE instead of travelling to Europe or the U.S. or going back home, in order to enjoy the exciting activities offered during the summer period.
"Tourists now view Dubai as their favourite vacation destination," Safar noted, citing the increasing tourist arrivals in Dubai as the best evidence of the fundamental change experienced by the Emirate which was suffering lean trade periods during the summer months before the launch of the DSS.

Commenting on how DSS has contributed to reviving the retail trade in Dubai, Safar said, "The effect has been huge so far, with these activities sprawling among more than 50 shopping centres around the Emirate. The miscellaneous entertainment shopping options offered through DSS have drawn in large numbers of tourists and residents, including children and adults alike."
"The current massive increase in tourist inflow proves in no uncertain way the positive change the Emirate retail and tourism industries have witnessed since the launch of DSS," she added.
Talking on the relationship between the DCCI and the two festivals, Safar stressed the fact that the DCCI has been actively involved in all initiatives to promote DSF and DSS since their inception. "The DCCI has always been bent on effectively contributing to the resounding successes achieved by the two mega-events. We are always participating in all initiatives aimed at highlighting the monumental progress achieved by Dubai on all fronts," she said.
Safar concluded by saying that upcoming major developments in Dubai would only enhance the city's reputation as a unique tourist and entertainment centre in the region as well as offering investors unique opportunities.
